Latest Addition To My Collection

Disclaimer sket. Mmg my collection buku2 fiction sgt besar and always bertambah-tambah, tp I buy because I enjoy reading bukannye sbb saje2 nak buat collection. Hahaha~

So, last month mase cuti CNY, husband and me telah decide utk balek ke alor star. So, as most of you already know, Alor Star nie mcm agak jauh jugak la dari KL. At least 5 hours. So, sbb aku nie mmg x ske kalau x tau ape nak buat, so I paid a visit to Kinokuniya the afternoon before kami berangkat so that dlm perjalanan ke Kedah nnti ader la buku nak bace. Turns out that sampai hari nie pon x abess2 lagi baca.  Ehe~ Btw, kalau korg keje kat tmpt aku keje, Kinokuniya KLCC nie la tmpt yg paling convenient nak beli buku :)

Nanny Returns!! Sambungan kepada The Nanny Diaries yg telah dipublish quite a few years back. The Nanny Diaries jugak telah diturn into a movie of the same name starring the beautiful Scarlett Johanssen. But as always is the case, buku is definitely better than the movie.

But in the book buying madness, I’ve overlooked and it turned out that…

Ngeh!! buku tu rosak la plak. Drama queen sket. Actually, aku x kesah pon. Buku kalau lagi buruk ngn lunyai lagi I appreciate. Seriously, tak taulah knape perasaan aku camtu.

I also bought the book by Daniyal Mueenuddin entitled “In Other Rooms, Other Wonders” Yang nie blom bace lagi sbb skrang still tgh baca Nanny Returns.

A Spot of Bother – Mark Haddon

It has been a while since I commented on a book that I’ve read.

That does not mean that I’ve stopped reading. Aku membaca like always, always with a book.

THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF THE DOG IN THE NIGHT TIME was the first book by Mark Haddon that I’ve read. Obviously, this is novel number two by Mr Haddon read by me. Apparently, this is only the second adult novel by Mark Haddon, after THE CURIOUS INCIDENT.

The title A SPOT OF BOTHER ialah very related to the first source of worry in this story. George, a 61 year old retiree noticed that he has a spot on his body (x ingat kat ne) and was certain that it was cancer. This little spot really bugged him and drove him up the wall. With his daughter getting married for the second time to a man that George didn’t like, his son being gay and him finding out that his wife is having an affair (the hard way, believe me), life is not easy for George. He made it harder for himself by keeping it all bottled up in his head and taking drastic actions without talking to anyone.

If you read this book, then you’ll understand that George went really crazy just because of a spot and worries about things that he shouldn’t.

The ending turns out to be very beautiful. Like always, everything eventually will turn out fine. Though not in the best possible way that you would prefer but not the end of the world either. His daughter’s new husband turns out to be a good man at heart. George’s son is gay, but your son can be anything and he’s still your son. And George told his wife that he knows about the affair, and she realized at once that although the affair was very exciting for her, in the end, it’s her husband feelings that mattered the most rather that her boyfriend.

A SPOT OF BOTHER makes me think that love, when it first started was very exciting and like everything else it needs working at. When things get boring, you look elsewhere for excitement but when it’s getting late, it’s home that you return to. So why not work at making home an excitement. And please, share your thoughts with someone because two heads can be better than one.

The Associate - John Grisham

As a Grisham fan, I'm proud to declare that Grisham is back!!

There was a few law books by Grisham not long ago that wasn't very captivating for me, then there was fictions and one non-fiction (proof that Grisham can write on things other that law stuff) and then there was The Appeal. Now, there is The Associate.

Similar to The Appeal, this book glued you to its pages and pulls you to the next page and suddenly you realized, eh, I'm nearly finished already. The ending, although not dissapointing, it's definitely unexpected. Try reading this book the you'll be like "Aaahhh, I know how this is gonna end," but believe me, when you do read that last page it's something else.

A very short synopsis on The Appeal;

Kyle McAvoy just finished studying law. His future is very promising and he's more interested in helping people rather than working in big firms, earning big bucks. The situation changes when Kyle was blackmailed into working with a big firm, because of a past incident that he wasn't even sure whether he was a part of. Thinking of those invloved in that incident, Kyle chose to work with the law firm, but being blackmail, he has to transfer confidential information from the firm he is now working with to a group of people, that Kyle thinks, can do anything and has unlimited resources.

I'm not giving any spoilers, so just read the book ya!!

p/s: Am now reading My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult. I have to have a book to read all the time, if not, i'll be bored.

Angels and Demons - Dan Brown

This is the third Dan Brown book that I've read, after Da Vinci's Code and Digital Fortress. I have to say that I like the first two books that I've read better. My husband loves this book tho, he's already started reading this book for the second time.

The main character of Angels and Demon, Robert Langdon (yeah, the same Robert Langdon as in Da Vinci's Code) and his female counterpart in this novel, Vittoria Vetra, has to go through a kind of like a riddle to find old churches, in order to save four cardinals. The rest of the novel evolves around them sorting out the riddles.

The novel was nearly 600 pages, and almost all describe the happenings of one night! Imagine that. The novel started when Langdon was awakened by a phone call very early in the morning and end at the same night except for the last few pages.

The movie is coming out in May, and i doubt that the movie will be able to outdo the book, but i'm looking forward to it anyway! I finished the book especially for the movie, so that I can compare :)

The Other Boleyn Girl - Philippa Gregory

I put reading Angels & Demons on hold when I bought this book. I want to read this novel first. The first impression I get when I read the synopsis at the back cover of this book was that this is going to be a fast paced novel, old fashioned english (because the novel is set in the 16th century), and chick literature (even though it is 1500-ish chick lit). It has the elements that I love. Especially the old-fashioned part, I dont know why but I like the big skirts that the ladies wore way back when.

Well, as usual, I dont like to give synopsis, I'd rather give my views on this novel instead. For the review, please visit the author's website or as I always put it, just google it!

The Other Boleyn Girl is like a dramatized history based on the lives of 16th century aristocrats at the English Court as seen by Mary Boleyn. As these people actually exists way back when, some critics said that some of the things that happened or mentioned in the novel are not historically correct. But who cares! I like the novel :)

The chick lit part of this novel is the fact that Mary and her sister Anne are rival in an old fashioned way. By old fashioned i mean "I hate you, but I'm gonna act as if i love you so much and i am so gonna get back at you, when you and other people dont realize it. Or if they do, they gonna see it as if I am doing a good thing for you when actually I'm gonna get my revenge." Haha~ Throughout the novel, this pattern is apparent. Everybody is doing everything to move themselves or their family closer to the throne without appearing to be doing so, with always a sweet smile and sweet words to hide the mean things that they actually do to get their desires.

The other thing that is very prominent in this novel is that the King Henry desperately wanted a son and is willing to go to extreme ends in order to get one (that and a new wife)! This is really frustating when a daughter can be just as good (or sometimes even better).

In a way, this novel ader la buat aku sket rase geram because it seems that during the 16th century, women importance and sole purpose in this life is to conceive a baby, carry it full term and make sure a son comes out after 9 months. What the *#^@ !!!!

Well anyway, there is a movie produced based on this novel (starring Scarlett Johansson and Natalie Portman), and my next move is to check this movie out. It has been out since Feb 08 but I am yet to see it. I'd like to see if the history is twisted more in the movie. Hihi~

The Memory Keeper's Daughter - Kim Edwards

The last book that I've read was The Memory Keeper's Daughter by Kim Edwards. I hate secrets and this book is all about keeping a big secret.

Naddie's View on The Memory Keeper's Daughter

This is a very good book. Not a very fast paced but it glued you to its pages until the end because you just dont know what's going to happen next.

It's about Dr David Henry and his decision to separate his own twins (a boy & a girl) at birth because the baby girl has down sindrome. He did this with no one's knowledge except his nurse, to whom he gave the baby girl to send to an orphanage. However, the nurse later decided to keep the baby girl. And the rest of the book develop on the effects of Dr Henry's decision to himself & his family (his wife & his son) and also on the lives of the nurse and Dr Henry's separated daughter.

It can be easily understood why Dr Henry did what he did. His little sister was also sick and died. He was saving his wife from the pain of seeing their sick daughter. Plus, this story was set in the 60's, which i believe people have issues of acceptance imperfection.

All in all, this book shows that how one's decision can affect many people and how sharing your problems with other people will not only help you but other people too.

Playing for Pizza - John Grisham

I've been reading John Grisham's novel since i was in high school, when i was in form 2 i think. He introduced me into US legal world. But Playing for Pizza has nothing to do with the legal world.

This can be considered as a short novel, anyone can easily finish it in a day (but it took me over a month, i think). I am not gonne give a synopsis on this book, you can google it if you want and you'll get lotsa returns.

What i want to say is that, Playing for Pizza prove that sometimes when you feel that your life sucks and you are at an all time low, it just might be a new beginning & a new oppurtunity for you. That life is so much more meaningful and fulfilling when u r doing something you love for the people you love and make you feel like u r a part of the family even when u r far away from home.
